Stretching is the deliberate lengthening of muscles in order to increase muscle flexibility and joint range of motion. Stretching activities are an important part of any exercise or rehabilitation program. They help warm the body up prior to activity thus decreasing the risk of injury as well as muscle soreness. I enjoy stretching to loosen up tight muscles and increase blood flow where there may be some stagnation. You can go on line and look up some easy stretching moves, join an exercise class that specializes in yoga or Pilates. Make sure you never hyper extend your body which can cause injury and always start with small movements if you are not used to stretching.
Here are 5 benefits to stretching:
Reduced muscle tension
Increased range of movement in the joints
Enhanced muscular coordination
Increased circulation of the blood to various parts of the body
Increased energy levels (resulting from increased circulation)
